Loss

For Rachel, who urged me to write a story even though I have absolutely no idea what to write. (I know it sucks.)

The sea stretched out across the vast void so that its horizon looked as if it was embracing the sky. The sun was dying, splashing his orange innards across the sky with little bits of purple, pink and red. Perfect, this moment. If only time would cease now and capture this picture forever.

Foamy waves crashed onto the white sand only to retract to the sea's bosom. Soothing, the sound of rolling waves and whispering wind. He stuck his tongue out and could taste the moment; salty, with a strange undertone of peace. Salty, like the tears on her cheeks that he kissed away.

The last rays of the sun faded, revealing a sky littered with stars. For a moment he saw her, raven hair dancing in the wind, bright eyes flashing in the dark. Something squeezed his lungs and he felt the air gush out of him. He waited for the prickling sensation behind his eyes and the inevitable swelling of tears but was disappointed. A long, hearty cry would release some anguish. A dry sob would only further hurt his soul.

Broken promises and a broken heart. The waves touched his feet and the icy cold water penetrated his soul. He wished that she had gone to a better place. The wind caressed his face and kissed his eyes. Why did she have to leave him so soon? The sand moved under his feet and slid into the ocean. The memories are already slipping from his mind.

He threw her favourite flower into the ocean and watched it sway with the waves. Red, in the midst of darkness. Why did she have to die so young?
